Awake, alert, excited or maybe a little scared of what’s going to happen. You can feel sweat on the small of you back and goosebumps on your forearms. It’s finally happening and it’s happening under your terms. You got it. “Dominator” by Kalipo & Local Suicide is an electro anthem full of physicality and furor, of determinedness and power. The female vocals are like the voice inside your gut that you should listen to a little more often, while the driven bassline and 80s inspired analog synths will occupy your mind and focus your thoughts. “Crocodile”, the second track of the release, is the other side of the coin – not any less definite, however more haunted and introspected in contrast. It isn’t always easy, but let’s take control and dance it out before life eats us up!

The digital double single “Dominator / Crocodile” is released on 5th February via Hold Your Ground, incl. Remixes by Theus Mago a.k.a. Bufi from Mexico City and Radial Gaze from Saint Petersburg. Making their debut on Eskimo Recordings this March, Berlin producers Franz Matthews & Local Suicide’s ‘Meditation / Tutan Jamon‘ was a heady brew of psychedelic disco that joined the dots between the German capital and the sun soaked souks of North Africa.

Hailed as “propulsive and zen” by Resident Advisor and championed by DJs including Dj T, Red Axes, Perel & Acid Washed, the tracks have now been giving a fresh rub, with Eskimo going one better even than the genie from the Arabian Nights and fulfilling 4 wishes summoning up remixes from Manfredas, Chaim & Ozart, NTEIBINT and The Oddness.

First out of the trap is Lithuanian producer Manfredas. Having made a name for himself with releases on labels like Les Disques de la Mort, Multi Culti and I’m A Cliché, Manfredas turns in a head spinning remix of Tutan Jamon, teasing out and extending the track in a masterclass of delayed gratification that eventually dissolves into acidic bleeps and drones. Tel Aviv’s Chaim & Ozart remix of Tutan Jamon meanwhile sees the sometime Bpitch Control and Disco Halal producer up the tempo whilst losing none of the original’s exotic vibe. In his hands the track becomes a propulsive and trippy disco number perfect for late summer parties under the stars.

Eskimo stalwart NTEIBINT is up next with his reinterpretation of Meditation. Once again the Greek producer goes to show just why the label has him on speed dial, delivering a stunning remix with Vamparela’s vocals and a hypnotic bass line combining to mesmerising effect.

Finally fresh from remixing Satin Jackets Australian rising star The Oddness returns to Eskimo with his own spaced out take on Meditation. Keeping the tempo slow and low the Melbourne producer unravels the track, pulling apart its constituent parts and allowing them all to float free.

„Style“ can be defined as that special ability to watermark every track with an instantly-recognizable identity.

Local Suicide, aka Munich’s Brax Moody and Greek-born Vamparela, has it in spades. And following releases on labels such as Bordello, My Favorite Robot, Multi Culti, Roam, Duro and OMBRA, it only made sense that the duo would eventually find its way to Lumière Noire. 

After all, „black light“ (as per the meaning of Chloé’s label’s name) could describe the way Local Suicide’s music flirts with the more troubling zones of the listener’s psyche, where danger roams and aural comfort is no longer a guarantee.

The EP’s two tracks set a dark, shifty sonic tableau, in which German-American multidisciplinary artist – and a unique personality of the Berlin underground – Nicki Fehr comes to blend his voice with Vamparela’s.

With its swerving bass slithering over a slow tempo, Leopard Gum is the perfect slow burner, a slice of comatose disco that will find its way to the darkest corners of nightlife – and haunt its DJ sets. The synths that come crashing across the track’s Smagghe & Cross remix add their saturated signature that provide a different kind of hook through its breathless nine-minute run.

The same measured tempo is found once more on the more ethereal Already There, where Local Suicide affirm their adherence to the more captivating signatures of new wave and post disco. Permanent Vacation stalwarth Lauer adds a surprizing electro pop shimmer to the track, while Niv Ast’s version maintains the tension of the original’s superimposed vocals.

With Leopard Gum’s opaque and impenetrable atmosphere, Local Suicide have released one of their strongest efforts to date.

Having previously featured on Eskimo Recordings‘ 2018 compilation ‚The Purple Collection’ as one half of Languages, Franz Matthews returns to the label alongside fellow Berliners Local Suicide with the ‚Meditation / Tutan Jamon‘, 2 tracks of heady disco that join the dots between the German capital and the sun soaked souks of North Africa.

Despite living on the same street for 4 years Franz Matthews and Vamparela & Brax Moody from Local Suicide only recently met through their common friend Sam Berdah (Days of Being Wild, Club Bizarre). Making up for lost time, the trio soon found themselves bonding in the studio, digging into their love of both the esoteric and travelling, and together channelled those passions into 2 spiritually infused numbers.

‚Meditation‘ was the first result of this inspired partnership, appropriately recorded at the same time that Matthews was also recording music for a meditation app, and features a freeform stream of consciousness from Vamparela over a suitably hypnotic backing of wistful guitars and breezy rhythms. ‚Tutan Jamon‚ meanwhile shares its DNA with recent Eskimo releases by the likes of Simple Symmetry and SHMLSS, the track built around a couple of very Egyptian influenced riffs and comes in two distinct versions.

Between his production studio MOWD, his duo Languages, and his solo electronic project, Franz Matthews keeps himself busy. Making Berlin his hometown for the past 5 years, the Franco-German producer and DJ has always kept one hand in the Indie Dance world, while the other wanders in more Psychedelic Pop realms, a winning combination that’s seen him release music on imprints such as Eskimo Recordings, Days of Being Wild, Rockets & Ponies.

Local Suicide, aka DJs and producers Brax Moody and Vamparela, meanwhile have made a name for themselves putting on some of the most infamous underground parties Berlin has to offer, running their acclaimed blog and still finding time to make waves with their productions, a wild fusion of new wave, acid, slow techno and post-disco that has seen them work with the likes of Rodion, Mijo and Curses in recent years.
